The state government today accorded sanction to the creation of 3,375 posts of various categories for five new medical colleges to be established in various districts.
The Cabinet approved 2,025 posts for medical colleges at Rajouri, Baramulla and Anantnag and creation of 1,350 posts to be operative in the financial year 2018-19 for medical colleges of Kathua and Doda, once they are sanctioned by the competent authority.
Officials said these posts shall be strictly as per the Medical Council of India guidelines with 675 posts per medical college.
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which convened a meeting of the Technical Evaluation Committee at New Delhi on January 15 last year and on June 5 this year, had approved medical colleges for Anantnag, Baramulla, Rajouri, Kathua, and Doda. It also released Rs 19,203 crore (Central share) for the execution of these five new medical colleges. Besides, an amount of Rs 5.70 crore (state share) has also been released under the capex budget during 2016-17 and 2017-18 for the purpose, officials said.
The Public Works Department and the Jammu and Kashmir Public Construction Company have been engaged as executing agencies for these medical colleges.
In the first phase, out of five new medical colleges, three are likely to be completed during 2018-19, subject to availability of funds from the Government of India.
The department is planning to start the first batch of 100 MBBS seats per medical college by 2019. Besides, the two medical colleges of Doda and Kathua shall be made functional during the corresponding year.
The Cabinet also accorded sanction to the creation of 10 posts of faculty members for Government Medical Colleges in Srinagar and Jammu. The posts include two each of Professor, Cardiology, Associate Professor, Cardiology, Associate Professor, Dermatology, Assistant Professor, Cardiology, and one post each of Professor, Ophthalmology and Professor, Pathology.
